My Post-Thanksgiving Rant & A Hustler’s Never-Ending Pursuit In Business

At the Turkey Bowl this past weekend, I was asked:

“How do you keep a balance between business and relationships?”

Without hesitation I said:

“I don’t.”

If you wanna make it in the big leagues and hit some accomplishments that your future family would brag about…

Business has to be a huge priority in your life.

This doesn’t mean that everyone else has to come second…

No.

What it does mean is that there’s gotta be times when you’re not as available as people want you to be…

And this is something that most wanna-be hustlers can’t accept.

Most of em have no clue about the level of discipline and commitment that a true hustler needs to make it big,

and they’ll never get why you’re always in a rush to get back to your grind…

For them:

  • They’d rather rest than rise…
  • Watch TV instead of reading a book…
  • Gossip about people instead of sharing ideas…
  • Eat junk instead of exercise…

For you:

It ain’t easy to turn off your brain…

And yup, you’re probably branded as a workaholic…

It’s gonna take some true and understanding friends to accept that you’re focused on building your future and that while you’ll be settled down someday – Now is NOT the time.

Mark Cuban’s words:

“Don’t start a company unless it’s an obsession and something you love. If you have an exit strategy, it’s not an obsession.”

Take it from the owner of the Mav’s: be obsessed.

If you’re not, then you’re in the wrong hustle, period.

Obsession is what gets you through those tough times and don’t kid yourself cuz they’re comin’:

  • fatigue
  • burn-out
  • malnutrition
  • setbacks
  • wasted money
  • excessive parties
  • family drama
  • lack of sleep
  • loneliness
  • arguments
  • and an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness

These things can’t be avoided so it’s up to you how you respond…

Nothing’s gonna get easier, you just gotta get stronger.

For example:

I lived 9 out of 12 months of the year overseas…

Am I enjoying myself? Sure…

But the real reason I’m away is that being in a country where I don’t understand the local language helps me focus…

  • I’m not distracted by the TV/radio/media…
  • not distracted by people and their conversations…
  • and not bothered by those who just don’t get it…

90% of my time, I work in complete solitude.

Not because I don’t have friends; it’s because I’m obsessed…

And the thick armor I have against all obstacles above has been battered and beaten to the point that I know that nothing can break through it…

Here, let me sum this up since I’m starting to get a little ranty…

  • A balance between business and relationships is pretty freakin’ tough (you gotta know this and be ready for it)…
  • Stick with the people who will truly understand you and support your journey to achieving your dreams (there will only be a few)…
  • And be willing to say NO to the all the things that’ll slow you down (this is gonna be 80% of the stuff you fill your brain with)…

And with that, I’ll end here…

If you find yourself as already having balance in your life or already being surrounded by true ride-or-die friends and family…

Consider yourself lucky and take yet another moment, to be thankful…

Thank God It’s Monday,

Jay D. Magpantay

P.S.

I’m thankful for not only a growing business,

but for the warmth and love of my family – my parents, two sisters, and the rest of the gang…

The support of my long-time bros, and the ability to help and impact the lives of strangers like yourself around the world…

Dear Universe,

I am forever grateful…
